President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially accepted the departure of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the expiration of his second term in office.
Professor Yakubu, first appointed in November 2015 and reappointed in 2020, has completed his statutory tenure as the 14th chairman of the electoral body.
In a statement from the State House, President Tinubu expressed appreciation for Professor Yakubu’s dedicated service and his role in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy through the conduct of credible elections.
As a mark of recognition, the President has conferred on Professor Yakubu the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
President Tinubu also directed that May Agbamuche-Mbu, the most senior National Commissioner, should take charge of INEC’s affairs pending the appointment of a new chairman.
In his letter dated October 3, 2025, Professor Yakubu thanked the President for the privilege to serve and for the confidence reposed in him throughout his tenure.
