The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a new salary structure for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, describing the decision as a landmark intervention that underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of the nation’s military.
Matawalle said the approval by President Tinubu would significantly improve the welfare of military personnel while strengthening their motivation, professionalism, and readiness to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Minister described the salary review as a historic demonstration of the President’s recognition of the sacrifices made daily by officers, soldiers, ratings, and airmen in defending the country’s sovereignty and protecting the lives and prperty of Nigerians.
According to him, investing in the welfare of military personnel is fundamental to building a highly motivated, disciplined, and combat-ready Armed Forces capable of effectively discharging their constitutional responsibilities.
“The approval of the new salary structure reflects the President’s unwavering commitment to the welfare, wellbeing and operational readiness of our brave personnel who continue to make immense sacrifices in defence of our nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Matawalle said.
He noted that improved remuneration would not only enhance morale across the services but also reinforce professionalism and inspire greater dedication among personnel engaged in ongoing military operations across various theatres, including counter-terrorism, anti-banditry, anti-kidnapping, and efforts to curb oil theft and other security threats.
The Minister said the intervention aligns with the Tinubu administration’s broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture through sustained investments in military capabilities, acquisition of modern platforms, improved logistics, enhanced training, and better welfare packages for personnel.
He urged the Chief of Defence Staff, the Service Chiefs, field commanders, and all members of the Armed Forces to reciprocate the confidence reposed in them by the Federal Government through renewed commitment, discipline, loyalty, and excellence in service.
“The Armed Forces must continue to uphold the highest standards of professionalism while remaining resolute in the defence of our nation and the protection of all Nigerians,” he said.
Matawalle expressed confidence that the improved welfare package would further motivate troops to sustain the momentum of ongoing military operations and contribute to the collective goal of building a stronger, more resilient, and more secure Nigeria.
