The Federal Government has intensified efforts to strengthen national security and emergency response capabilities through the deployment of the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, a technology-driven initiative designed to provide every location in Nigeria with a unique digital address.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, said the project forms part of a broader digital transformation agenda aimed at building the foundational infrastructure needed to support security operations, economic growth and efficient public service delivery.

Speaking after a stakeholder workshop on the practical application of the digital postcode system, Tijani said the initiative would serve as a critical layer for security coordination and emergency response across the country.

The workshop brought together the Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), Tola Odeyemi, alongside representatives of security and intelligence agencies to explore ways of integrating the system into national security operations.

According to the minister, the digital postcode system will assign every residence, business and public facility a unique, machine-readable and geographically anchored address, enabling security agencies and emergency responders to locate incidents and coordinate interventions more effectively.

He noted that accurate location identification remains a critical requirement for modern policing, disaster management, intelligence gathering and emergency services, adding that the new system would significantly improve the ability of government agencies to respond to security threats and emergencies.

Beyond security applications, Tijani said the digital postcode initiative would improve address verification processes, enhance logistics and e-commerce operations, support financial inclusion and facilitate the efficient delivery of public services.

The minister described the project as one of several strategic digital infrastructure programmes being implemented by the administration over the past three years. Other initiatives include Project BRIDGE, the planned deployment of 90,000 kilometres of fibre-optic infrastructure; the Nigeria Universal Communication Access Project (NUCAP), which aims to connect more than 20 million Nigerians through 3,700 telecommunications towers; the Nigeria Data Exchange; and ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s artificial intelligence ecosystem.

“As we continue to build the digital foundations of our economy, it is important that every person, business and location can be accurately identified and connected within a modern digital ecosystem,” Tijani said.

He disclosed that consultations with stakeholders would continue ahead of the official launch of the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System scheduled for October, expressing confidence that the initiative would transform how security agencies, businesses and public institutions operate across the country.

The Federal Government believes the digital postcode system will not only modernise Nigeria’s addressing framework but also provide the location intelligence required to support a safer, more connected and digitally enabled society.
