Former Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Muhammad Nami, has called on Nigerians to embrace civic responsibility and national pride as essential tools for national development. He made the call yesterday at the Summit on Journalism and Its Impact on National Development hosted by the Centre for Patriotism and Values Re-Orientation in Abuja.

Speaking at the event, Nami described the current moment in Nigeria as a “renaissance,” noting that, despite persisting challenges, the country is experiencing significant investments in technology and witnessing the rise of a new generation of experts, media professionals, and political leaders.

“If we must—as a country—stand the test of these times, we must get the fundamentals right,” he said. “Media practitioners must uphold professionalism and exercise care and skill in executing their duties. Their reports and publications have far-reaching implications beyond circulation—they influence business confidence, political stability, and the social fabric of our country.”

Nami emphasized the correlation between responsible journalism and economic growth, arguing that a nation that gets its fundamentals right—including in the media space—will experience increased investment inflows, job creation, economic stability, and rising GDP.

The former tax chief also urged both citizens and corporate entities to pay their taxes promptly, stressing the multiplier effect of responsible civic behavior on infrastructure development and public welfare. “Airports, roads, schools, hospitals, and even our security systems are built and sustained through taxes,” he said. “When we do things the right way, we all benefit.”

He also charged the government to ensure that tax revenues are transparently and effectively utilized for the benefit of the Nigerian people.

In recognition of his contributions to national development, Nami was conferred with the Pan-African Leadership Award by the organizers of the summit. He expressed gratitude for the honor, pledging to remain committed to the service of Nigeria.

“I do not take this honor for granted,” he said. “It is a call to continue in service to our dear nation.”
