ABUJA, May 13 — The Nigerian Communications Commission says telecom operators and tower companies invested more than N2.5 trillion in network upgrades in 2025 as part of efforts to improve service quality.
In a statement signed by its Head of Public Affairs, Nnenna Ukoha, the NCC said Mobile Network Operators invested N2.13 trillion in infrastructure and upgrades, while Tower Companies invested N373.8 billion.
The Commission said the investments supported the addition and upgrade of more than 2,800 telecom sites nationwide.
It said operators have also committed to adding or upgrading more than 12,000 sites in 2026.
Close to 3,000 sites have already been delivered this year, while more than 730 additional 5G sites have been deployed across 27 states.
The NCC said 4G penetration rose from 45 percent in January 2024 to 54 percent currently.
It said national median download speed also increased from 16.5Mbps to 20Mbps within the same period.
Power availability at telecom towers improved from 99.3 percent in January 2025 to 99.7 percent currently, it added.
The Commission said the gains were more visible in areas where upgrades had been completed.
It, however, said many consumers still experience dropped calls, slow internet speeds, congestion and unstable data services.
The NCC said operators must ensure that investments translate into measurable service improvements for consumers.
