Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned from office ahead of plans to contest the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State.
In his resignation letter, Tuggar expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve and contribute to the administration’s 4D foreign policy strategy.
He also appreciated the management and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as members of the diplomatic community, for their support during his tenure.
During his time in office, Tuggar pursued a people-centred diplomatic approach, overseeing humanitarian evacuations, facilitating scholarships, and strengthening support systems for Nigerians abroad. He also advanced diaspora engagement through the development of a structured Nigerians-in-Diaspora database.
His tenure further recorded progress in strengthening Nigeria’s bilateral and multilateral relations, particularly with partners in the Global South, while promoting regional security cooperation and democratic partnerships. He also drove economic diplomacy initiatives aimed at attracting foreign investment, especially in the energy sector.
The former minister also played a role in securing the release of detained Nigerians abroad through diplomatic engagements.
Tuggar submitted his resignation to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation ahead of the March 31 deadline set for political appointees seeking elective office, in line with the directive of President Tinubu and provisions of the Electoral Act.
The letter was received by Dr. Abubakar Kana, Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, on behalf of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
