Former member of the House of Representatives, Rep. Sir Sam Ifeanyichukwu Onuigbo, has declared his intention to contest for the Abia Central Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Onuigbo made the announcement on Friday at Odoziobodo Hills in Obuohia Obi Ibere, Ikwuano Local Government Area, describing his ambition as a call to deploy experience in advancing the “Renewed Hope” agenda.
The former lawmaker said his decision followed extensive consultations with family members, political associates, and leaders of the APC, adding that unity within the party would be critical to the success of the bid.
He traced his motivation for public service to his early life experiences in the community, where he trekked long distances to access education—an experience he said shaped his commitment to grassroots development.
Onuigbo highlighted his nearly 18 years of service at the United States Consulate General in Lagos, where he rose to the position of Supervisory Fraud Prevention Specialist, noting that the role provided him with significant exposure to policy, diplomacy, and governance.
He also referenced his service as Commissioner for Lands and Survey and later Commissioner for Finance in Abia State, as well as his role as Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, as key milestones in his career.
Elected into the House of Representatives in 2015 and re-elected in 2019 to represent Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, Onuigbo said he facilitated several development projects across the constituency.
According to him, these include the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the Umuahia–Ikwuano–Ikot Ekpene federal road, erosion control interventions in affected communities, electrification projects, and the facilitation of a Federal Secretariat for Abia State. He also cited efforts that contributed to the restoration of Management Sciences courses at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
The APC chieftain further pointed to his sponsorship of a sustainability-focused legislation that earned both national and international recognition as part of his legislative record.
Onuigbo, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in 2020, said his political decisions have consistently been guided by a commitment to progressive governance.
He stressed that his senatorial ambition aligns with the policy direction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the National Assembly requires experienced lawmakers to support ongoing reforms.
“Abia State cannot afford to send individuals of doubtful pedigree to the Senate. What is required are those who have been tested and proven in character and performance,” he said.
He urged voters in Abia Central to prioritise candidates with demonstrable track records, integrity, and accountability, adding that democratic consolidation depends on the quality of representation.
If elected, Onuigbo pledged to adopt an inclusive representation strategy that ensures engagement across all wards, state constituencies, and local governments within the senatorial district.
He also expressed appreciation to APC leaders and members in Abia Central for their support during the 2023 elections, describing it as a foundation for his renewed bid.
Political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections are gradually gaining momentum, with aspirants across parties beginning consultations and early declarations in key constituencies.
