ISWAP’s Chief Finance Operative Captured as 46 Terrorists Surrender Amid Intensified Intelligence-Led Operations

Nigerian security forces have captured a senior Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) finance operative and recovered an assault rifle, ammunition and other items, in what authorities described as a significant blow to the group’s financial and logistical network in the northeast.

The development comes as approximately 46 terrorists and their family members have surrendered to troops in recent days, suggesting growing pressure on terrorist groups operating across the region as military operations increasingly combine intelligence gathering, coordinated ground offensives and air strikes.

The ISWAP operative surrendered to troops of the 3 Battalion, under the 24 Task Force Brigade, at about 6:45 a.m. on July 25 along the Ladari–Jegarawa–Tunokalia axis of the Gamboru–Wulgo main supply route.

According to preliminary profiling, the man was the chief finance operative of the ISWAP enclave at Jubillaram, where he was responsible for managing the group’s financial activities and logistics. He surrendered alongside two male children.

Troops recovered one AK-47 rifle, four magazines, 101 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, one motorcycle and N40,000 from him. According to the operations spokesperson, he is undergoing further profiling and interrogation, with military authorities expected to use information obtained from him to identify and target other terrorist elements and their support networks.

The capture of a senior financial operative comes against the backdrop of a broader effort by Nigeria’s security and intelligence agencies to improve the sharing and coordination of operational intelligence. The closer alignment of intelligence gathering with military operations has enabled security forces to build a more detailed picture of terrorist movements, supply routes, financial networks and concentrations, allowing operations to be conducted with greater precision.

That inter-agency approach has increasingly been reinforced through coordination at the national security level, including efforts led by the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) to improve cooperation and intelligence-sharing among the country’s security and intelligence institutions. The objective is to ensure that information gathered by one agency can more quickly inform the operations of another, particularly in counterterrorism theatres where terrorist networks operate across geographical and operational boundaries.

The surrender of the ISWAP finance operative, who occupied a position central to the group’s ability to sustain its operations, represents a significant setback to the organisation’s command, financial and logistical structures.

The development also comes amid a series of coordinated land and air operations by Operation HADIN KAI against terrorist enclaves in the North East. The military says the sustained pressure has contributed to a growing number of defections, with about 46 terrorists and their family members voluntarily surrendering to troops in recent days.

For the military, the combination of battlefield pressure, improved intelligence and opportunities provided through the Federal Government’s non-kinetic initiatives is beginning to create what it described as a widening fracture within terrorist ranks.

The latest surrender carries significance beyond the individual involved. As the chief finance operative of an ISWAP enclave, his loss potentially disrupts the mechanisms through which the group raises, moves and deploys resources to sustain its operations.

The Theatre Command of Operation HADIN KAI called on remaining terrorists to take advantage of the Federal Government’s non-kinetic initiatives and lay down their arms, while urging residents to continue providing security agencies with timely and credible information.

The command said such cooperation from the public remains critical to sustaining counterterrorism operations and restoring lasting peace and stability across the North East.

The statement was signed by Capt. Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, in Maiduguri on July 25, 2026.
